LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Lucas County, Ohio is currently occupying the ancestral and contemporary territory of the Kiiakapoi (referred to as the Kickapoo by settlers), Meškwahki·aša·hina (Fox), Peoria, Kaskaskia, Bodwéwadmi (Potawatomi), Ottawa, Wyandot and Myaamia peoples. The county also resides on the land of the Treaty of Detroit 1807 and the following land Cessions: 18, 19, 170, 160, 87, 70, 182, 183.

The map below shows Eurocentric approximations of some of these Nations' territories in the year 1763.

Indigenous scholars and activists have combined efforts to create native-land.ca, a website to show the traditional territories of various Nations and link to the descendant political entities. In the case of Ohio, it is important to note that many of the descendant political entities may be located farther west, but biological descendants of these Nations and other Indigenous Nations are still very much part of Lucas County.

More information on land cessions can be found on the Library of Congress website including texts from the United States Congress and a map showing cessions.
